- Answers to Common Questions
Your Questions, Answered
We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions we hear from families—so you can feel informed, confident, and supported.
What is companion care, and what does it include?
Companion care is non-medical in-home care focused on social engagement, emotional support, and daily assistance with errands, meals, and light housekeeping. Unlike personal care—which involves hands-on hygiene and body care—companion care is centered on relationship and presence. Brightwood companion care plans include activities, walks, conversation, errand support, medication reminders, and care documentation after every visit.
How is companion care different from personal care?
Personal care involves direct physical assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting. Companion care doesn’t include hands-on hygiene assistance—it focuses on engagement, emotional wellbeing, and daily support tasks. Many families start with companion care and add personal care as needs change. Brightwood makes that transition seamless with no gap in coverage or CarePro continuity.
How do I know if my loved one needs companion care?
The most common signs: they’re spending most of the day alone, they’ve become quieter or more withdrawn, they’re skipping meals, losing interest in hobbies, or making more frequent anxious calls to family. Social isolation in seniors is linked to faster cognitive decline and higher fall risk. Companion care isn’t just a nice-to-have—for many families, it’s a real health intervention.
Will my loved one always have the same CarePro?
Consistency is the foundation of great companion care. We assign a primary CarePro based on personality, skills, availability, and care needs. While illness, vacations, or scheduling changes occasionally require a substitute caregiver, we work hard to minimize disruptions and provide a qualified replacement who is familiar with your care plan.
What if the CarePro match isn't the right fit?
Tell us and we’ll fix it — no fees, no friction, no awkward conversations. Contact your Care Coordinator and we’ll find a better match promptly. Your loved one’s comfort and trust come first, always. Getting the relationship right matters more to us than any contract.
How quickly can companion care start with Brightwood?
In many cases, care can begin within hours of your first call. Families often reach out during moments of real urgency — a hospital discharge, a fall, or a sudden change in condition. Call 480-718-7180 and a Brightwood Care Specialist will assess your timeline immediately and work to get a matched CarePro in place as fast as possible. We coordinate directly with discharge teams at Banner University Medical Center, HonorHealth, and St. Joseph’s Hospital for same-day transitions home from the hospital.
How many hours per week do families typically start with?
Most companion care clients start with 10–20 hours per week—typically a few hours each weekday morning or afternoon. Some families need just a few check-in visits per week; others need full daily coverage. Brightwood schedules are flexible and can scale up or down as needs change, with no long-term contract required.
Are Brightwood caregivers background-checked and insured?
Yes. All Brightwood CarePros are direct W-2 employees — not independent contractors. They undergo multi-step background checks, drug screening, and skills testing. Every CarePro is fully insured, bonded, and actively supervised. You are never responsible for employment taxes, liability, or logistics.
What Phoenix neighborhoods does Brightwood serve?
Brightwood serves all Phoenix neighborhoods including Arcadia, Biltmore, Ahwatukee, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Glendale, Tempe, Chandler, Mesa, Peoria, Sun City, Sun City West, Surprise, Anthem, Gilbert, Goodyear, and all of Maricopa County. Call 480-718-7180 to confirm coverage at your specific address.
Does insurance, VA benefits, or Medicaid cover personal care?
Long-term care insurance often covers in-home personal care — we’ll help you navigate your policy. Arizona Medicaid (AHCCCS/ALTCS) may cover personal care for qualifying individuals. Brightwood also accepts VA benefits for eligible veterans and their spouses. Most clients self-pay, but we’ll walk you through every available funding option so nothing is left on the table.
What makes Brightwood different from other personal care agencies in Arizona?
Three things families tell us matter most: CarePros who are W-2 employees (not contractors), a matching process that pairs personality and routine — not just availability, and a 24/7 Care Specialist Line staffed by real Brightwood team members. Add BrightAssist™ monitoring and our zero-missed-shifts commitment, and it’s a different level of accountability than most agencies can offer. See what Arizona families are saying — we’d love to earn your trust too.
